3rd Retrospective (2019)
Retrospective is a series of orchestral pieces where I look back at my own music and try to use it in a different way. I do this mostly by re-composing existing material through my apps Gestrument and ScaleGen where I can import the ”musical DNA” of a piece and then see what else can be obtained from the same material.
In the 3:rd Retrospective for electric violin and string orchestra I focus on earlier violin music by myself as well as some of the music from my childhood – a folk tune composed and played on the fiddle by my father Batte Sahlin. Therefore this piece can be said to represent a meeting between my own music and some of its origin.
The idea to compose this piece for electric five string violin comes from the soloist Malin Broman whose continued search to expand her repertoire and musical vocabulary was a major inspiration when composing this piece.
The other pieces in the Retrospective series have been commissioned by the Brandenburger Symfoniker, the Munich Chamber Orchestra and for the inauguration of the new campus of the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.
